A painful reality for countless leaders is the endless feeling of being overstretched, overworked, stressed-out and alone.

My clients complain about it all the time.

It certainly describes my own leadership experience.

When I got started as head of school of a 360-student, independent K-8 with limited resources, my administrative team and I simply did not have the manpower or the competitive advantage that so many other schools in our community enjoyed.

Staffing shortages were everywhere.

We had no admissions director or marketing professional.

There was no resource room, let alone anyone to staff it.

Computers were formally taught only to our youngest grades, and by the librarian.

Our athletics team coaches were all volunteers. They even drove our kids to the games since we had no budget for busing.

And then there was our administration. The three of us shouldered a myriad of responsibilities that extended well beyond conventional school leadership.

Compounding the problem were the expectations from our board, who wanted me to significantly raise the school’s academic standard after years of perceived complacency.

I felt like I needed to get help - and fast - if I was going to make it out alive.

While I did get a mentor and even formed some support groups (professional and lay,) I really wish that I would have joined a mastermind.

When David, a small business owner, hired me to coach him, he was struggling to stop working in his business so that he could spend more time working on his business.

The problem was that he was too busy dealing with the daily grind of making his business run (managing the office staff and often providing the service himself) that he couldn’t focus on things that would grow his business, such as pursuing new, bigger clients and increasing engagement on social media.

We got right to work on delegating tasks, by repositioning existing personnel and bringing on a manager, so that he could be “out there”, meeting and selling.
